In response to escalating global plastic pollution and low-carbon development goals, countries worldwide have successively introduced strict single-use plastic ban policies. Traditional petroleum-based plastic products, which are non-degradable, long-lasting, and highly polluting, are being phased out in catering, packaging, daily consumer goods and other fields. Against this backdrop, corn starch-based biodegradable products and eco-friendly paper products have emerged as the two most mainstream and practical alternatives, leading the transformation of the green packaging industry.

Corn starch-based products are typical bio-based degradable materials, mainly processed from fermented corn starch to produce polylactic acid (PLA). As renewable and sustainable raw materials, corn resources effectively reduce human dependence on fossil fuels. Different from traditional plastics that take hundreds of years to decompose, qualified corn starch products can be completely degraded into carbon dioxide, water and natural biomass within 90 to 180 days under industrial composting conditions, leaving no microplastics or toxic residues in the environment. These products cover a wide range of applications, including disposable tableware, food packaging bags, takeout lunch boxes and shopping bags, with good heat resistance, toughness and waterproof performance, which can fully meet the daily use needs of catering and retail industries.

Paper products are the earliest and most widely promoted green substitutes for plastics. Made from recyclable and renewable plant fiber, ordinary paper bags, paper boxes, paper cups and paper tableware have the advantages of low production technical threshold, fast natural degradation and convenient recycling. With continuous technological upgrades, upgraded coated paper products have solved the pain points of poor waterproof and oil-proof performance of traditional paper materials, greatly expanding their application scenarios. In supermarket shopping, daily gift packaging and general catering packaging fields, paper products occupy an absolute market advantage by virtue of their high cost performance and mature industrial chain.

Both corn starch-based and paper products have core environmental advantages over traditional plastics, yet they have distinct characteristics and applicable scenarios. Corn starch degradable products excel in waterproof, oil-proof and high-temperature resistance, making them more suitable for takeout catering, hot food packaging and wet commodity packaging with high functional requirements. However, their shortcomings are also obvious: they rely on professional industrial composting conditions for rapid degradation, and the production cost is relatively high, limiting their large-scale popularization in low-demand scenarios. In contrast, paper products have lower costs, simpler degradation conditions and higher recycling efficiency, but they are poor in water and oil resistance, and are easy to deform and damage in humid environments, unable to adapt to high-standard food packaging scenarios.

At present, the environmental protection industry is gradually forming a complementary development pattern of corn starch-based materials and paper materials. Relying on policy guidance and market demand, the two types of products continue to iterate in technology and process. Corn starch materials are reducing production costs and improving natural degradation adaptability, while paper products are optimizing functional coating technology to enhance waterproof and durable performance. In the context of global plastic restriction and carbon neutrality, the coordinated development of these two green materials will completely replace disposable non-degradable plastics, effectively alleviate white pollution, and inject continuous impetus into the sustainable development of ecological environment.
