Corn Starch Disposable Tableware Becomes Hot Eco Product in UAE

         The United Arab Emirates fully implemented a nationwide single-use plastic ban on January 1, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. Any restaurant, hotel or takeaway store caught using plastic cutlery, bowls or food boxes will face a minimum fine of 200 AED, and repeated violations will double the penalty.

         Against this policy background, corn starch disposable tableware has become the most popular legal eco-alternative across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. This tableware is made from renewable corn starch raw materials. It contains no BPA, PFAS or other harmful substances, and can be completely decomposed into water, carbon dioxide and organic humus within 180 days under industrial compost conditions, which will not pollute desert landfills and the Gulf marine environment like traditional petroleum plastic.

         However, ordinary pure corn starch tableware will turn soft and deform when exposed to hot oily food or long-distance transportation under high desert temperatures. To fix this flaw, most suppliers add PLA (polylactic acid) raw materials to produce modified starch tableware. The upgraded products can withstand temperatures up to 120°C, which perfectly matches the year-round hot climate of the UAE.

         At present, large supermarket groups, high-end resort hotels and catering shops in major tourist areas such as Dubai Mall and Palm Jumeirah have completely replaced plastic tableware with modified corn starch products. Over 70% of local food merchants choose this product to meet regulatory requirements and build a green brand image for tourists.

         In terms of import trade, UAE customs carry out strict inspection for all imported biodegradable tableware. Importers must provide conformity certificates, food safety test reports and composting qualification documents, otherwise the goods will be detained or returned. Industry analysts predict that demand for corn starch tableware will keep growing steadily in the next few years, and the UAE will remain the core consumption and trading hub of plant-based disposable packaging in the GCC region.
